- Industrial Designers Laud Apple PowerBook Computers and
- StyleWriter Printers for Innovative, User-Friendly Designs
-
- CUPERTINO, California--May 30, 1995--Apple Computer, Inc. has
- again received recognition for outstanding industrial design in
- the prestigious annual Industrial Design Excellence Awards (IDEA),
- co-sponsored by the Industrial Designers Society of America and
- BusinessWeek Magazine.
- Chosen from over 750 entries, the PowerBook 540c and the Color
- StyleWriter 2400 were bestowed the silver award in their
- respective categories. At the same time, the prestigious gold
- award was presented to Masamichi Udagawa, a member of Apple's
- Industrial Design team and three interaction designers from
- Apple's User Experience Research Group--Charlie Hill, Nancy Silver
- and Heiko Sacher, for their research in design methodologies.
- Their research focused on determining and understanding the
- problems of user interface when designing highly integrated
- hardware and software products.
- "We are honored to have our industrial designs and research
- recognized with these distinguished awards," said Bob Brunner,
- senior director of Apple's Industrial Design Group. "We view the
- design of our products as very important at Apple. By developing
- great designs and creating new ways to enhance our user's
- experience, we will continue to lead the industry in this area."
- A jury of eight judges evaluates the entries on the following
- criteria: 1) design innovation 2) benefit to the
- client/manufacturer 3) benefit to the user 4) ecological
- responsibility and 5) aesthetics. After a pre-screening process,
- finalists are selected from the highest scores and presented to
- the jury for final discussion and selection. Since the contest's
- inception in 1980, Apple has been one of the most award winning
- companies,
- garnering the fourth highest number (17) of total awards.

- About the PowerBook 540c
- Introduced a year ago, the PowerBook 500 series, including the
- 540c, offers a host of new technologies to the mobile customer.
- These include a re-engineered industrial design, brilliant color
- display technology options, intelligent and energy efficient
- battery design, 16-bit CD-quality stereo sound capabilities for
- built-in multimedia and presentation support, greater expansion
- flexibility and built-in Ethernet. In addition, all 500 series
- PowerBook computers are upgradable to PowerPC technology.
- The new design features a rounded, elegant form factor, including
- curved palmrests and the renowned centered trackpad. As Peter
- Lewis of the New York Times said at its introduction: "It looks
- like a cross between Dodge's new pick-up truck design and a
- Stealth fighter jet." The PowerBook 500 series was the first
- notebook in the industry to implement a trackpad pointing device.
- Customer response to the Apple trackpad has been overwhelmingly
- positive.
- During testing of this new design, most users adapted to the
- trackpad within the first five minutes of use compared to other
- input devices which often took up to an hour to learn.
- The PowerBook 500 series industrial design has also been honored
- with the following awards: the Good Design Award by the Japan
- Industrial Design Promotion Organization (JIDPO), the Design
- Distinction Award in International Design Magazine's Annual Design
- Review and the SMAU Design Award (Salone Macchine Attrezzature per
- Ufficio), a prestigious design award in Europe.
- The PowerBook has also received several prominent industry awards
- from BYTE Magazine including its 1994 Award of Excellence,
- Reader's Choice Award and Best of Comdex Award (Spring 1994).
- BYTE Magazine's annual awards are given to computer-related
- products that represent important breakthroughs in innovation.
- Using a nomination and voting process, BYTE editors and licensees
- around the world rated computer products and technologies based on
- their level of innovation, price/performance and market impact.
- The PowerBook was also named Favorite Traveling Computer in a
- CompuServe user poll as well as Best of the Year in Mobile Office
- Magazine's Annual Technology Roundup 1994. In addition, JD Power
- and Associates last year rated Apple's PowerBook computers number
- one in customer satisfaction, beating out several other major U.S.
- and international notebook computer vendors.

- About the Color StyleWriter 2400
- Debuting last fall, the Color StyleWriter 2400 delivers impressive
- speed, crisp text and vibrant colors at an affordable price. It
- is ideal for families, educators and small businesses who want
- high quality color documents without the high cost of professional
- services. The Color StyleWriter 2400 was designed to provide an
- approachable and friendly user experience, accentuating the small
- footprint with a more vertical form factor. The surfaces have a
- simple,
- three dimensional quality with clues such as soft recesses to encourage
- the user to intuitively understand how it works.
-
